North Carolina Campgrounds

Along with Virginia, these two states clearly exploit the Appalachian Mountains for all their Beauty!

Pinehurst RV Park

*Sep, 2002

Aberdeen, NC
(Southern Pines)
Aberdeen/Southern Pines/Pinehurst is an affluent area in the flatlands of North Carolina which is home to the Ladies' US Open. It's also home to numerous other Golf courses and well-known for it's Long-Leafed Pine Trees. The campground was built to be an exclusive cg but did not end up as such! They're also a Passport America participant.
e/w/s onsite.
Jordan Lake Recreation Area - Poplar Point

*Oct, 2002

Apex, NC
(Raleigh, NC)
One of the closest state parks to Raleigh, the park is one of the few state parks in NC that offer water and electricity. It features it's own Boat ramp into Jordan Lake as well as a cordoned off beach area for swimming. 30% of the campsites are located next to waterways leading to and from the Lake. Very picturesque campground but be forewarned - the NC state recreation areas LOCK their gates at night. There's no leaving or entering the park after these hours. (Except in extreme emergencies)
Bear Creek RV Park

*Nov, 2000
Asheville, NC Very clean, concrete pads on top of a hill. From the exit one can see the Biltmore Mansion atop a neighboring mountain on a clear day. Pricey in the summertime, they charge you for breathing!
Asheville East KOA
*Jun, 2002
Swannanoa, NC
(Asheville, NC)
Typical KOA - on a major highway, small campsites, but had a nice stream running through it.
MaMa Gerties
*Jul, 2004
Swannanoa, NC
(Asheville, NC)
Definitely the best campground we've found in the Asheville area! Bear Creek is on top of I-40/I-26, and the KOA is right next to the Railroad Track. Mama Gerties, as close as it  is to I-40 (exit 59) it is far enough away to be quiet! Very Family oriented cg but no pool. Gated cg.       e/w/s
Appalachian RV Park
(828) 264-4504

*Aug, 2002
Boone, NC Nice Campground located on Ray Brown Rd just off of NC 194, about 3 miles North of US 421. Campers are parked are parallel in the main park, with the extended section offering back-ins. There's no pool, and no bathroom facilities in the extended section of the park, and only one bathroom in the main section. But this cg is close to downtown Boone. The weekend we stayed here that were barking dogs and roosters all in the mountainside. This is a seasonal campground.
Boone KOA

*Aug, 2002
Boone, NC This is the highest KOA east of the Mississippi River at 4,000 feet. Probably the nicest campground in the Boone area. They have a heated pool, a deer petting pen, putt-putt golf, along with the typical KOA restrictions. But it's a mile further off of NC194 on Ray Brown Rd (from Appalachian RV Park) which provides for a much quieter existence! This is a seasonal campground. e/w/s/
Grandfather Mountain Campground

* Mar, 2003

Boone, NC

Campground is located in a very scenic area though cg lacks a lot of aminities. The only cg that's open year round and is very near the ski slopes! e/w/s on most sites. They now nickel and dime you to death, and watch you closely to make sure you're not breaking any rules! This cg is 3rd of my choice of 3 cg's in this area!
Paramount's Carowinds Campground Charlotte, NC The only nice campground convenient to Charlotte. Needless to say it's not the quietest campground we've stayed at as it is on the grounds of the theme park!
Lowes Motor Speedway Campground

*Nov, 2002
Charlotte, NC Exit 49 off I-85 in North Charlotte is home to one of the largest Outlet Malls in America and the Speedway / Campground complex. Across the street from the Speedway one doesn't have to travel far on race day. Campground is completely covered in gravel except for the "winner's Circle", a small area in the middle overlooking a pond with premium priced lots. Real pricey and full on race weeks, but fairy empty other times. Located in an area rich with restaurants and shopping. Bass Pro Shop Outdoor World is the anchor store for the mall about a mile from the cg.  e/w/s/cable onsite.
Cherokee KOA

Area Pics!
Cherokee, NC Nestled in the valley surrounded by Mountains, this KOA is located on the banks of a fast moving mountain stream. Very picturesque campground - located within 10 miles of downtown Cherokee.
Riverside Campground

Cruso, NC
(Brevard, NC)
This campground is in the heart of the Pisgah National Forest. Mount Pisgah is also home to the majority of North Carolina's scenic water falls. The campground has a number of permanent campers living here but overall it's a fairly nice campground that allows you to explore this national forest region! There are two National Park Service campgrounds in the area, one on the Blue Ridge, the other in Brevard, but they offer no hookups. Their surroundings are spectacular but I wouldn't recommend a summertime stay in these two parks!
Hot Springs Campground

*Sep, 2001
Hot Springs, NC Hot Springs Spa and Campground is located about 40 miles North of Asheville, NC. Located on the French Broad River in this sleepy little town is this campground on one side of the road and the Spa on the other. The Spa features a number of Hot Tubs, secluded from each other with private views overlooking the river. There exists a natural Hot Spring on this land that's proclaimed to have "healing" powers. Past Presidents have made the trek to this site and claim to have healed their Arthritis. They clean and drain the Hot Tubs between each bather, refilling with either  naturally heated and treated 100 degree mineral water, or 104 degree mineral water from the hotter spring. I must confess that these waters do cure what ales ya.. They provide you iced mineral water to drink while you soak, with all the nutritional properties of this water. e/w/s onsite.
Outdoor Resorts - Blue Ridge Mountains Motorcoach Resort

*May, 2002
Lake Toxaway, NC Located on US 64 between Brevard and Cherokee NC, this resort serves only Class A's, 25' minimum length and newer than 10 years old. They have a 9 hole golf course, heated pool and Hot Tub. Located within 40 miles of some of the prettiest Waterfalls in the US. Some you can drive behind, others you can walk behind, and still another - the longest waterfall in the East, these are the waterfalls one will find on the Calendars featuring waterfalls! Easy trails to get to most too. Modem hookup in laundry room. These lots are for sale but one can rent without any salesman abuse. e/w/s/cable onsite.
Mountain Stream RV Park
828-724-9013

*Oct, 2001

Marion, NC David and Christina Smith are two of the nicest people one can hope to meet. Located North of Marion on Hwy 80, just 4 miles South of the Blue Ridge Parkway and on Buck Creek, this little campground is complete family oriented. Everyone is invited to the Church across the creek each Sunday with no special attire. The love to have the campers come visit. They are seasonal, and their weekends are usually booked but one must try and stay there when passing through. One of the cleanest cg's we've stayed in. They pay great attention to providing their campers a perfect stay. e/w/s onsite.
Homeplace Recreational Park

136 Homeplace Rd
Ararat, NC 27007

336-374-5173

*Aug, 2002

Mount Airy, NC This is actually located in Ararat, NC about 10 miles Southwest of Mount Airy - home of Andy Griffith. This town along with Pilot Mountain (Mount Pilot and Mayberry) were the inspirations for The Andy Griffith shows back in the 60's. The local townsfolk are real proud of this as memorabilia of this era is everywhere. The city is situated in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, less than 15 miles South of the Virginia border. The city is proud of it's Bluegrass music as well, hosting a variety of bluegrass festivals each year! Be sure to see the WPAQ Merry-Go-Round broadcasted live from the Downtown Cinema stage each Saturday Morning. Homeplace Recreational Park has one of the largest swimming pools located in the region, it's about 3/4 the size of a Football field, to swim costs an extra $5.00 / day / person although they do offer "camper swim evenings" on Fri and Sat nights from 7:00 to 9:00 pm. The campground is about 60% full timers and is behind locked gates so you have to arrive there before the office closes (7:00 pm). Camping is seasonal, from April 01 through November 01. Located off of Little Mountain Church Road. E/W/S sites.
Rivercamp USA
800-748-3722

*Oct, 2000
Piney Creek, NC This campsite is down in a valley right on the New River, a few miles South of the Virginia border. This cg has over 50 canoes and offers two different canoe adventures - one 2 hour and another 4~6 hour trip. They bring you upriver, drop you off and allow you to meander back to the cg in their Canoes. Their also a Passport America participant. e/w/s.
Camp Hatteras

*Jun, 1997
Rodanthe, NC This campground has concrete, level pads and patios, with each site offering an extra water spigot for those sandy feet! Real clean, lean on shade trees but it's right on the Atlantic Ocean. Again the beach front sites are actually next to the sand seawall but there are plenty of clean trails to get you to the water. This campground has two pools, one indoors the other outdoors as well as Mini-Golf, Paddle Boats, Cable Television and other recreational items. These campsites offer much more space than it's neighbor, Cape Hatteras KOA which is a little cheaper to stay at <grin>. e/w/s onsite.
Cape Hatteras KOA

*Jun, 2000
Rodanthe, NC This campground offers level, sandy campsites - unlike it's neighbor listed Camp Hatteras. These two campgrounds are next door to each other so if one is full you won't have to travel far before your checking the other one. We found this cg to be a little more crowded than Camp Hatteras as the campsites are smaller. With sandy campsites and gravel roads this campground  appears to be not as clean as Camp Hatteras but that could very well be just a matter of opinion <grin>.
Bear Den Family Campground

*Jul, 2000
Spruce Pine, NC This campground, located at milepost 324.8 on the Blue Ridge Parkway, is truly set on the side of a mountain. The access road to reach this CG is somewhat narrow in many spots - you don't want to be meeting another wide-body nowhere on the half-mile road. This Campground, being on top of the mountains and with little or no street lights, really provides one a tremendous view of the night sky! e/w/s onsite.
Spruce Pine Campground
*Mar, 2002
Spruce Pine, NC Nice, small campground located off of Hwy NC 226. Conveniently located near the Spruce Pine Super Wal-Mart and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Check out Little Switzerland, NC while your there! e/w/s onsite.

Lake Lure RV Park & Campground

* Mar, 2005

Lake Lure, NC
(Near Chimney Rock State Park)

This is absolutely the first campground that I would STRONGLY recommend a camper to PASS UP! The new owner (summer of '99) advertises this cg as family yet he evicted my family and called the police lying about his accusations toward us in the middle of the Labor Day Holiday weekend. My daughter and her friend was playing with about 18 rocks from the road (they had constructed a fireplace for their dolls on our patio pad) when he ordered them very rudely to return the rocks to the driveway or he'd have them arrested. These two 10 year olds came inside the RV crying from this man's rough abuse to them. I personally witnessed him mistreating another camper's son the evening before for riding his bicycle on the grass next to the playground - told this 4 year old that if he caught him riding on anything other than the gravel again he would evict him and his family. When I asked him what the problem was because there were no rules regarding playing with rocks while not throwing them, he immediately kicked me out. He then left his stool, came into my face and threatened me. Next he called the sheriff stating he had a trespasser who was refusing to leave. The sheriff came, listened to both sides and ordered the guy to refund my money. He also refused to arrest me for vandalism and trespassing charges citing the owner had no case. This owner made a tremendous event of NOTHING! But worst of all, he truly scared the heck out of a bunch of little children that weekend! My suggestion - Stop by or call Lou & Pat Hughes explaining why your not patronizing their campground! We've checked with the local authorities and it seems this man has a stack of complaints against his cg and behavior!
UPDATE: I received notification today that Lou has not backed off one bit! I can't believe this place is still operating!

Virginia Campgrounds

As the length of this section proves, we really have enjoyed the parks and campgrounds in Virginia. Like their motto says, "The Land for Lovers", they have plenty of the East Coast's most beautiful, natural scenic areas and historic places. I'm not stating that other states in this region don't have their share, we just haven't made it to them - yet! One thing that Virginians should be proud of are their State Parks. We've not found one yet not worthy of many return visits!

Holiday Lake State Park

*May, 2002
Appomattox, VA Located on State Route 24 between Appomattox and U.S. 60, approximately 12 miles from the Appomattox Courthouse National Historical Park which is where the Civil War piece Treaty was decided between Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant. Totally secluded, very quite yet secure, this park is on battle grounds of the Civil War. Maximum official length is 30' but they have 5 sites which allow 36 footers. Leveling your rig can be a challenge on some sites. Seasonal - e/w with central dump station onsite.
Paradise Lake Family Campground

*Dec, 2001
Appomattox, VA This campground is quietly located on US -460, close to the Appomattox Court House, the Blue Ridge Parkway (approx. 40 miles), and Liberty University. Campground is about 60 miles East of Roanoke VA, this area of the country contains esthetic natural beauty and plenty of Civil War historical sites! e/w/s onsite.
Breaks Interstate Park

*Oct, 1998

Breaks, VA

This park is NOT near an Interstate as the name might imply. It's actually a joint effort of the states of Kentucky and Virginia at their Northern intersection. Russell Fork of the Big Sandy River has cut a "break," a 1,600-foot-deep gorge through Pine Mountain known as the Grand Canyon of the South. This is true American heritage up in this part of the country. It's still has depressed, simple, mining communities which is home to the nicest, clean-living, modest, hardworking, blue-collar, proud American families. The scenery is spectacular but it's difficult to get to. Whatever you do, do NOT take SR50 north from I-81 to get there! The first item you see leaving the Interstate is a huge warning sign telling you that vehicles over 30' in length cannot travel through the Mountain Pass - 20 miles in length. What they don't offer you though is a place to turn around! But it's truly beautiful country that I'd highly recommend everyone to see. e/w with central dump station onsite.
Front Royal KOA

*Dec, 2000
Front Royal, VA Located at the base of Skyline Drive near Shenandoah National Park, and in the middle of a cow pasture this KOA offers plenty of peaceful, quite camping. Located near Front Royal VA, home to many civil war battles. Front Royal VA is a very picturesque city in the Shenandoah Mountains. A seasonal campground, Mar 15 - Nov 01. e/w/s.
Misty Mountains Camp Resort

*Jun, 1998
Greenwood, VA This campground is nestled fairly close to the start of the Blue-Ridge Parkway and the ending of the Skyline Drive! It's also about 30 miles from Monticello, Thomas Jefferson's home in Charlottesville, VA. This area of Virginia is truly beautiful and Charlottesville is home to the University of VA, the university that Thomas Jefferson designed and oversaw construction of! e/w/s/phone.
Hungry Mother State Park

*Sep, 2002
Marion, VA Located 4 miles north of I-81 on St Route 16 near Marion, this State Park is easily accessible and very clean. They have a park managed restaurant that the locals favor greatly. They offer all types of boat rentals, swimming, and fishing on a most beautiful lake. Down Rt. 16 nearer to Marion is one of the few new Drive-Ins, offering first-run movies during the summer months. Facilities are e/w onsite; maximum official length is 30' although they allowed my 36 footer. Central dump station.
Ft. Chiswell RV Campground
*Sep, 2000
Max Meadows, VA This campground is closer to the I-77/I-81 split than the Wytheville KOA (by about a mile or two). This campground is very flat with level, graveled campsites but it also has no shade trees. It's also very well cleaned and maintained. Open year round.
Walnut Hills Campground Mint Spring, VA This campsite, on I-64/I-81 about 10 miles south of Staunton VA, is very nicely maintained. It offers lake-side camping, campsite telephone and cable, and during peak season it has weekend live entertainment (Family oriented and this entertainment strictly adheres to quiet hours!)
Natural Bridge KOA
*Aug, 2000
Natural Bridge, VA Nicely shaded campground not too far from the Natural Bridge. Far enough off the Interstate to not have to hear the traffic all night. e/w/s.
Campground at Natural Bridge

*May, 2003
Natural Bridge, VA  Located on the James River nestled in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley of Virginia between the Blue Ridge Mountains and Interstate 81, 5 miles from Natural Bride, VA makes this park a more quieter, scenic park than that of KOA. Natural Bridge is said to be one of the seven wonders of the world, once owned by Thomas Jefferson. A must see! e/w/s on wooded sites, e/w on river sites.
Pocahontas State Park

*May, 1999
Richmond, VA Another nice VA State Park, located about 20 miles South of downtown Richmond. This cg is closest to Richmond, is quite, has a swimming pool, hiking trails, and allows fires. We enjoyed staying here  and touring Richmond although the campground itself is nice enough to just spend time at. e/w sites with central dump station.
Aquia Pines Camp Resort
*Feb, 2000
Stafford, VA This one is our favorite when visiting the Washington DC area. It offers campsite phone service and it's sites offer a little bit more shade and space than the campground in Maryland, however it is a little further away from downtown DC. Open year round. e/w/s/cable/phone services.
Fairy Stone State Park

*Sep, 2002
Stuart, VA This campground is nicely located about 10 miles west of Martinsville, VA on St Highway 57.Martinsville hosts numerous true Furniture Factory Outlet Stores for the discontinued and slightly damaged pieces. We saw quite a few deer while staying here as well. The fishing in Philpott Reservoir is good too. For a truly breathtaking view go to Philpott Dam. Awesome view! Maximum length is 35' although they allowed my 36' with plenty of sites than can hold it. e/w with central dump station onsite.
Outdoor Resorts - Virginia Beach Resort

*Jan, 2000

Area Pictures!

Sandbridge Island, VA

(near Virginia Beach, VA)
Located on south end of Sandbridge Island, this resort is located overlooking the bay, but is within a block of the Atlantic Ocean. Very well maintained and beautiful resort, it features  heated pools and a Hot Tub, exercise room, sauna; with many of it's sites facing the bay which can provide some breath-taking sunsets. Convenient to VA Beach, this area offers some nice restaurants between Sandbridge Island and the VA Beach Boardwalk. Many tourist things to keep one busy as well. No Vans, Tents or Pop-ups, minimum RV (or trailer/fifth wheel) length is 18'.  e/w/s/cable onsite.

Fair Oaks Campground
(Formerly The
Pottery Campground)

Williamsburg, VA Nice, shaded lots through half of the park. Large L-shaped pool but only 5 feet deep. They also have a wading pool for the very young and a pretty challenging Mini-Golf course. Real close to all the Williamsburg activities and exhibits! e/w/s onsite.
Wytheville KOA
their other web address
*Aug, 1998
Wytheville, VA Nestled on the side of a hill it's a good resting spot for travelers. Located around 5 miles west of the I-77 / I-84 interchange. Open year round. e/w/s onsite.

South Carolina Campgrounds

Anderson/Lake Hartwell KOA Anderson, SC Nice campground with shaded fair sized lots situated far enough off the Interstate to miss the noise. Nice campground for over-nighting when traveling the I-85 corridor, or for weekend water enjoyment on Lake Hartwell. Located about 35 miles Southwest of Greenville, SC. e/w/s onsite.
The Campground at James Island County Park
*July, 2003
Charleston, SC This campground continues to be a really nice, clean place. They tried to develop this campground where each site is surrounded by trees and shrubs to give one a private setting. Within this County Park they have a Water Park with discounted prices for campground visitors. It's convenient to downtown Charleston and it's historic sites, and to Folly Beach on the Atlantic Ocean and it's public beaches.
Barnyard RV Park and Flea Market
*July, 2003
Columbia, SC This campground is good for the long-term RV'er who has a reason to be in Columbia, SC. The campground is close to all the shops and restaurants, and is close enough to town to even get DSL! Not a destination campground. It's not convenient to the Interstates but it's the nicest cg in the area.  e/w/s/c onsite.
Columbia RV Park
*May, 2003
Camden, SC This campground is close to the interstate I-20, and is a nice overnight campground. They allow long-term's but no pool and it's 20 miles out from Columbia. Nice cg for people on their trek to "the beach" (Myrtle Beach, SC)
Outdoor Resorts' Motorcoach Resorts
*July, 2002
Hilton Head Island, SC Restricted to Motor Coaches only, the campground - uh - Resort is very luxurious. Campsites are shaded, perfectly maintained, many of them surrounding lakes containing decorative water fountains. Inside this gated community, it offers Tennis, Racquetball, and Basketball courts, along with Sauna, Whirlpool, and swimming pools. Very affluent Island with much of it restricted by secured, gated access.
Lake Aire RV Park and Campground Hollywood, SC This campground is also close to Charleston, there are no shade trees on the grassy campsites. The access road is dirt, and the campsites are not very well defined. All in all, if you can get into James Island I would stay there first. But, this campground is more secluded, has a fishing pond, and being further away from Charleston, is less populated!
Ocean Lakes Family Campground

*Jun, 1997

Myrtle Beach, SC
This campground (as are all the rest around this area) is extremely huge. It's so large that they rent Golf carts to move around in. Then they have internal police actually directing traffic on weekend nights! (During the summer season) Beach-front sites are actually located behind the sand seawall. This campground effectively enforces it's 10:00 pm noise curfew as well - all Golf carts are required off the roads after this time which really calms down the traffic. They offer full hookups including onsite telephone service. e/w/s/cable onsite.

Tennessee Campgrounds

Holiday Trav-L-Park

*Mar, 2002
Nashville, TN Campground is the closest of three to Grand Ole Opry (less than a mile). Most sites are shady and the trees are novice- driver friendly. CG has nice sites, not on top of your neighbor, and your hostess is also your nightly entertainer <g>. Also their Tour Bus driver was an aspiring Singer/Songwriter <lol>. I guess the neat thing about Nashville (along with the Country venues everywhere - and Andrew Jackson's Home) is everyone looking for their break! The hostess that sings in the pool area in the evening is good, course they're all good....
Pigeon Forge / Gatlinburg KOA

*Sep, 2000
Pigeon Forge, TN There are plenty of campgrounds surrounding this little town, but this one is practically in the heart of it! Located right across the street from Dollywood (Dolly Parton's theme park), it has tight, small campsites. But it's convenient to most places here in the highly commercial, Country music venue town. The live shows in the area are fun to attend, especially the comedy reviews! e/w/s onsite. e/w/s onsite.
Riverbend Campground
*Sep, 2001
865-453-1224
Pigeon Forge, TN Campground is just off the main artery through town but it's up nearer the music auditoriums, real close and behind the Barbara Mandrel Show. Sites are a little close together but the park is kept clean and it's located on the Little Pigeon River. Seasonal. e/w/s onsite.
